Cat Yoga: 9 Lessons from Teaching at Tiny Lions

Note: The postings on this site are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Humane Society of Huron Valley.

Welcome to a heartwarming journey where yoga meets feline companionship! For the past two years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to teach cat yoga at the Tiny Lions Lounge and Adoption Center in Ann Arbor, MI.  This unique experience has brought together the tranquility of yoga practice with the playful charm of our feline friends.

At Tiny Lions, a part of the Humane Society of Huron Valley, over 3300 cats and kittens found loving forever homes as of October 2023, and I’ve been honored to guide over a hundred students on their yoga mats through this remarkable experience. In this blog, we’ll dive into the invaluable lessons I’ve learned along the way, from the joy of creating a harmonious environment for both humans and cats to the profound impact of consistent commitment and the powerful role of financial sustainability in making a difference. Join me as we explore the heartwarming world of cat yoga and discover the transformative power it brings to the lives of both humans and our furry companions.

My journey with cats began on September 10, 2001, just a day before the tragic events of 9/11. It was then that my family adopted two all-black sister cats, a moment that would set the stage for my profound connection with these incredible creatures. These cats offered me a firsthand experience of the unconditional love and comfort that an animal can provide, particularly during challenging times. Though those two awesome cats have since crossed the rainbow bridge, the love they shared with me has transformed and continues to manifest in other ways throughout my life.

In a delightful twist of fate, I adopted two of my own cats, Peanut Butter and Chocolate, from Tiny Lions in September 2019. These charming additions to my life remind me daily of the enduring bond between humans and cats and the joy they bring. =^.^= =^.^=

If you know about me, then you know that I started practicing yoga in 2008 and embarked on yoga teacher training in 2019, so the synthesis of cats and yoga has been a central theme in my life for a long time. Sharing these loves as a teacher at Tiny Lions has been an extraordinary gift. So, join me on this journey, and let’s explore the world of cat yoga and the life-changing experiences it has to offer.

Here's what I've learned from two years of teaching cat yoga at Tiny Lions:

1. Legacy Beyond Measure: The Unseen Ripples of Love and Giving

Teaching cat yoga at Tiny Lions is like adding a dash of sunshine to a cloudy day. There’s this beautiful thing about it: the legacy you create goes far beyond what you could ever imagine.

First, let’s talk about the cats. These little furballs come into Tiny Lions, and you get to watch as they take their first steps toward their forever homes. Now, we don’t get to peek through their new front windows to see them snuggle on a cozy couch or get their tummy rubbed. But we do know that something magical is happening in their new homes, as the bond between human and cat deepens and love blossoms. It’s like planting a seed and watching it grow into a beautiful garden, even if you can’t see the flowers from your window.

And then, there are my wonderful students. One day, I got a holiday gift from one of them with a heartwarming note about how much my class meant to her. I was floored. It’s not in my job description to be a magician who can read hearts. But here’s the thing – you never really know the impact you have on people until, well, they tell you.

In the grand tapestry of life, we are often just threads weaving our way through. But every now and then, we get a glimpse of the intricate pattern we’re creating, and it’s filled with warmth, love, and kindness. That’s the legacy that outlives us, and it’s a legacy beyond measure. It’s the legacy of Tiny Lions, the cats finding their homes, and the students finding their inner peace – all intertwined in this beautiful, heartfelt dance. So, my friends, remember that your legacy is a symphony of unseen ripples, and it’s creating a world filled with more love than you can imagine.

2. The Power of Unwavering Commitment: Show Up and Watch the Magic Happen

Picture this: it’s a cozy Sunday morning, and your alarm clock is competing with the sound of raindrops dancing on your window. You’re warm and snug under the covers, and your first instinct is to hit the snooze button. But then you remember – it’s cat yoga day at Tiny Lions!

You drag yourself out of bed, promising to make it up to yourself with a warm cup of chai later. As you head to the yoga studio, you might not be feeling 100% ready to conquer the day. But there’s something magical that happens when you commit.

Commitment, my friends, is like a secret superpower. It doesn’t waver, even when the world outside is full of distractions and doubts. It’s that unwavering promise you make to yourself, your students, and, in this case, a room full of cats who are eager to make you part of their morning yoga crew.

In teaching cat yoga, or any yoga for that matter, consistency is key. Your students put their trust in you to create a safe space where they can stretch, play, and find their zen. And it’s not just about the cats; it’s about the people who trust you to guide them through a practice that leaves them feeling rejuvenated and connected.

A good teacher lives their practice, but it’s also about living a balanced life. It’s about being fully present in the moment, not just for yourself but for your students, the cats, and the world you create together. When you show up, rested and ready, it’s like you’re casting a magic spell of serenity that envelops everyone in the room.

Sure, there are days when you might not feel like doing something. But let me tell you, the real gift is in showing up, rain or shine. There’s something incredible about the sense of accomplishment that washes over you once you’ve done it. You leave the class not just feeling better than when you arrived, but with a heart full of gratitude and a sense of purpose that’s hard to find anywhere else.

So, my fellow yoga enthusiasts, remember this: when you commit, you’re not just showing up for a yoga class; you’re showing up for yourself and for the world you touch. And trust me, magic happens when you do.

3. Business and Professionalism: Behind the Zen Curtain of Cat Yoga

Now, let me pull back the curtain and share a little secret with you – the world of cat yoga isn’t just about stretching and purring. It’s also about business and professionalism. When I started teaching at Tiny Lions, I wasn’t just the teacher at the front of the room; I had to put on my business hat too. That meant learning how to create invoices, maintain professionalism, and handle the behind-the-scenes aspects of running a class.

So, here’s the deal – running a cat yoga class is like running a well-oiled machine. You need to make sure that everything is in place, that your students feel safe and comfortable, and that the cats have room to strut their stuff. And that doesn’t happen by chance; it happens through preparation.

Being professional means more than just having a snazzy logo and a polished exterior. It’s about arranging class coverage with a substitute teacher when needed, so the show can go on even when you’re not there. It’s about communicating clearly, so your students know what to expect and feel like they’re in capable hands.

These skills have been crucial for my role at Tiny Lions and have played a vital role in keeping the class offering strong and consistent for the students we serve. After all, we want to make sure that when our students come to their mats, they can leave the world behind and dive into a world of relaxation, whiskers, and peace.

So, remember that while the cats are the main attraction, a little professionalism behind the scenes keeps the yoga magic flowing. It’s the purrfect blend of business and zen, and it’s what makes cat yoga at Tiny Lions not just a class but an experience worth coming back for.

4. Play Hard, Rest Hard: The Wisdom of Kittens

Alright, folks, let’s talk about a life lesson that I’ve learned from our four-legged friends – the art of being fully immersed in the present moment, whether it calls for action or rest. You know, just like a kitten does.

Have you ever watched a kitten in action? They’re like little bundles of energy, ready to pounce on anything that moves, or sometimes, on things that don’t. They play with the kind of enthusiasm that’s utterly infectious, making you want to join in on the fun.

But here’s the real gem of wisdom from kittens: they also know when it’s time to call it a day. You’ve probably seen them, all stretched out, fast asleep, looking like they haven’t got a single worry in the world. It’s as if they’ve cracked the code to life’s ultimate secret.

In the world of cat yoga, I’ve observed how vital it is to strike a balance between effort and relaxation. Yoga, after all, is about being 100% present with whatever you’re doing on that mat, whether it’s stretching into a downward dog or simply finding stillness in child’s pose.

The kittens have it right. They embrace each moment, whether it’s playtime with all the chaos that comes with it, or the stillness of rest. They don’t worry about what the next moment will bring because they’re fully invested in the here and now.

Let’s take a page out of the kitten playbook. Let’s play with enthusiasm, immerse ourselves in every experience, and then, when it’s time, let’s rest with the same wholehearted dedication. It’s in this balance that we find the true beauty of life, where play and rest become a dance that adds rhythm to our journey. After all, who wouldn’t want to be a little more like a kitten?

5. Welcome Distractions: Embracing Life's Surprises on the Mat

Imagine you’re on your yoga mat, ready for a serene practice, and then in walks a parade of kittens – fluffy, mischievous, and utterly adorable. What’s a yogi to do? Well, if you’re teaching cat yoga at Tiny Lions, you welcome distractions with open arms and a big smile.

During my time at Tiny Lions, I’d often find myself surrounded by not just 15 students but sometimes upwards of 20 kittens, and yes, I’ve even seen as many as 22 baby kitties in the room at a time! Now, you might be thinking, “How on earth can you stay focused with a whirlwind of paws and jingle bells in the mix?”

The truth is that distractions aren’t always a bad thing. In fact, they can be your greatest teachers. Just like in life, the yoga mat isn’t a bubble where everything is perfectly still and serene. Life has its own jingle bells and scampering paws, and the mat is where you learn to embrace them.

In those moments of feline chaos, I’d often use it as an opportunity to teach a valuable lesson – practicing yoga is not about never losing focus, but about lovingly working with the things that distract us. It’s about acknowledging the whirlwind and finding your center within it.

So the next time life throws you a curveball, remember the kittens. Embrace the distractions with an open heart and a sense of humor. Redirect your focus with kindness, and you’ll find that the ability to stay centered, both on and off the mat, becomes a superpower. After all, life’s greatest lessons often come from the most unexpected sources, and sometimes, they come with whiskers and a purr.

6. Incredible Students: The Beating Heart of Our Cat Yoga Family

Now, let’s talk about the real stars of the show – my incredible students. They’re not just the backbone of our cat yoga community; they’re the heart, the soul, and the purr-fect companions on this unique cat-centric journey.

I’ve been in awe of their dedication. They show up to class free from expectations or obligations, just eager to dive into their practice and let the kitties work their magic. It’s truly inspiring. They’re not there because they have to be; they’re there because they want to be.

Their commitment to personal growth motivates me more than they’ll ever know. It’s like watching a beautiful transformation unfold right before my eyes. They’re like yoga warriors, showing up on their mats, ready to conquer their own worlds, one asana at a time.

I often find myself wondering what exactly they get from their practice. Is it the serenity of a cat’s purr, the joy of a playful kitten, or the soothing yoga postures that make their effort worthwhile? I may never know for sure, but one thing is certain – they put their heart, their sweat, and their soul into it. And that, my friends, is a true inspiration to witness.

So, to my dedicated cat yogis, I salute you. Your unwavering commitment, your enthusiasm, and your hunger for growth is what makes our cat yoga family the amazing, unique community it is. You’re the ones who bring the magic to the mat, and I’m beyond grateful to be a part of this incredible journey with you. Keep purring, stretching, and growing – the world needs more yogis like you!

7. Everyone’s Path in Yoga is Different: Celebrating the Beautiful Diversity of Yoga Practices

Now, let’s delve into a gem of wisdom that’s close to my heart – the understanding that every yogi’s journey is as unique as a snowflake. Just like no two snowflakes are alike, no two yoga journeys are the same, and that’s what makes this practice so wonderfully diverse and beautiful.

In my own practice, I’ve found joy in balancing the physical postures (asana) and the wisdom of yoga philosophy (yoga sutras). But what’s fascinating about teaching cat yoga is that you meet yogis with motivations. For some, it’s as simple as braving a cold winter morning to move their body. Others are there for a social experience, seeking the warmth of companionship and the comforting feeling of being part of a community. It’s like they say, “There’s no one-size-fits-all in yoga.”

I used to think that yoga asana and philosophy were the be-all and end-all of a practice. But over time, I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of the many other inspirations and motivations that students bring to class, especially in an environment like cat yoga. After all, who can resist the allure of yoga mixed with the charm of feline friends? It’s the perfect blend of personal growth, community, and, of course, cats.

Remember that in the world of yoga, there’s room for everybody, every motivation, and every inspiration. Just like a snowflake adds its unique beauty to a winter landscape, your journey enriches the tapestry of our yoga family. Embrace the diversity, cherish the differences, and let’s keep celebrating the many paths that lead us to our mats.

8. Bringing More Love Into The World: The Power of Paws and Hearts

Here’s a heartwarming truth that we can’t overlook – our work at Tiny Lions isn’t just about cat yoga; it’s about bringing more love and compassion into this big world of ours. There’s an enchanting alchemy that happens when humans and cats come together. It’s a bond that transcends language and knows no boundaries. It’s a connection that’s woven with threads of affection, understanding, and, of course, a whole lot of purring.

Our furry friends have an extraordinary ability to open our hearts. They remind us that love can be as simple as a warm gaze, a gentle nudge, or a playful pounce. And in return, we offer them the love and care they need to thrive.

Thanks to this enduring bond, the world is a little brighter, a little kinder, and a little more compassionate. We’ve sprinkled love like confetti, and it’s not just in our hearts; it’s in the very air we breathe and it radiates out into the world and the people we interact with.

So, my fellow cat lovers, remember this – there is more love in the world because of you. Yes, you! Your love, your dedication, and your willingness to embrace these remarkable creatures have created ripples of love that extend far beyond the walls of Tiny Lions.

With every purr, every cozy nap, and every joyful yoga session, you’ve brought more love into the world. So keep on loving, keep on purring, and keep on sharing the magic of cat yoga with the world. You’re making a difference, one pawprint at a time.

9. Responding to the Symphony of Students: Teaching with Flexibility and Heart

Ah, the art of responding to the beautiful symphony of students in the room – it’s a skill that’s honed with experience, patience, and a big dose of heart.

You see, as a teacher, you never quite know who’s going to walk through that door, especially when your class is as welcoming to all levels. It’s a mixed bag of abilities, experiences, and expectations, and it’s your job to conduct this orchestra of diversity.

The key is flexibility. Just like a maestro adapting their performance to the mood of the audience, you must adapt your planned class to meet the unique needs of the students in the room. Sometimes that means offering pose adaptations for those who need a little extra support. Other times, it’s about guiding students through a more accessible version of a transition, making sure everyone can follow along like a well-choreographed dance.

But that’s not all – we’re here to add a bit of spice to the mix too! Sometimes, students want to “turn up” the intensity, seeking a bigger challenge. And what do we do? We turn the heat up and invite them to dance on the edge, pushing their limits in a safe and encouraging space.

So it’s not just about the poses and the flows; it’s about listening to the notes that each student brings to the class. It’s about conducting this symphony of individuals with grace and adaptability, ensuring that everyone gets a chance to leave your class feeling a little better than they did when they arrived. Remember, it’s not just about teaching; it’s about responding to the ever-changing melody of the students in the room. And in that dance, there’s magic waiting to be discovered.

Bonus Lesson: When Mindfulness Meets Kitty Chaos

Before we wrap up this journey, I have a little bonus lesson to share. In the world of cat yoga, you’re never truly prepared for the symphony of the unexpected, especially when it comes to the senses.

Once upon a time, I led my dedicated students through a mindful breathing exercise. I asked them to tune into their sensory awareness, focusing on the subtle sounds and scents in the room, including the gentle flow of breath.

Now, here’s where the story gets interesting. Just as we delved into the world of heightened awareness, a furry feline friend decided to make their presence known. And how did they choose to do it? Well, let’s just say it involved a rather pungent declaration in the litter box, accompanied by an unforgettable soundtrack of sounds.

In that moment, I learned a valuable lesson – don’t ask students to pay attention to smells and sounds when there’s a possibility that it could go wrong. As much as we wanted to practice the art of deep breaths and serene focus, sometimes you just have to laugh and embrace the unexpected surprises that cats bring to the yoga mat.

So, my dear cat yogis, remember that the path of mindfulness is a winding one, filled with surprises, laughter, and the sweet aroma of life’s imperfections. It’s a journey where even the not-so-pleasant moments become cherished memories.

And with that, I leave you with a smile and a heart full of gratitude for joining me on this extraordinary cat yoga adventure.

Cat Yoga – Where Whiskers Meet Warrior Poses

And there you have it, my fellow cat yogis! Our journey through two years of teaching cat yoga at Tiny Lions has been nothing short of extraordinary. From the purring symphonies to the playful distractions, the laughter, and the bonds formed, it’s been a rollercoaster ride of whiskers and warrior poses.

We’ve learned about legacy, commitment, professionalism, and the profound value of financial sustainability in supporting a cause we hold dear. We’ve witnessed the heartwarming transformation of students, each with their unique motivations and inspirations, sharing the mat with feline friends who’ve warmed and softened our hearts.

Through the ups and downs, I’ve come to realize that the path of yoga is as diverse as the snowflakes in a winter storm. It’s a journey that welcomes all, with open arms and open hearts, reminding us that yoga isn’t just about the physical postures; it’s about the inner transformation, the connections we forge, and the love we share.

Our work at Tiny Lions has added more love and compassion to the world, thanks to the bond between humans and cats. It’s a bond that’s as simple as a warm gaze, as pure as a kitten’s heart, and as lasting as our commitment to creating a better world.

Teaching cat yoga has been an enriching journey filled with unexpected lessons and a deep sense of purpose. I’m grateful for the students, the cats, and the opportunity to make a positive impact on both human and feline lives. Thank you for sharing this adventure with me, and remember, there’s more love in the world because of you.

So, until our next stretch together, stay cozy, my friends!
