Home Yoga Practice: 3 Reasons to Start Yours!

If you’ve been playing with the idea of starting a home yoga practice then now is a great time to dive in!

I say that because here in the US, winter is quickly approaching. This change is coming after about nine months of social distancing and isolation for many. Even after things get better – which they will – it’s important to have strategies to sustain a regular yoga practice. As such, you may want options that don’t include travel time to and from a studio.

No matter where you are in your yoga journey, right now is the time to embrace a home yoga practice. But really, any time is the right time. Here’s why…

Three Reasons to Try Yoga at Home

  1. Nobody is judging you (except maybe yourself)! As your practice deepens, you’ll find that you really are the only person judging you. When I started getting into my practice as a newbie,  I didn’t notice anybody else in the room. The weird thing is that it was the same for other people too. Nobody was really paying attention to me, even though we were within feet of each other!
  2. There is nobody to impress. A lot of instructors would be cool with you turning off your camera so that nobody’s looking at you. That way, it feels less like a competition. The focus shifts from going really deep into a posture and instead notice the sensations in your body.
  3. A home practice is super sustainable if you can commit to it! With a little creativity and resourcefulness you can find yourself a modest home practice space. You can also use whatever you have around the house without spending a lot of money on fancy yoga equipment. Imagine waking up and doing a quick 5-10 minute yoga practice that helps you feel better all through the day.

To wrap things up...

It feels awesome to go to a class and connect with your community in person, plus I can tell you the studios and teachers love having you there! The studio is one way to practice, and an important one too, but yoga can be taken off the mat and practiced almost anywhere, including the comfort of your own home.

If you’re looking for live virtual classes, check out Namaste Yoga based in Royal Oak, MI. They offer lots of weekly classes to fit your busy schedule. Not to mention, they offer virtual AND in-person classes (with masks and distancing for now).
